Bulgaria: Key Ex DPS Official Says 'Possible' to Work with Expelled Party Leader Photo by BGNES

Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS)'s co-founder Kasim Dal has said he doesn't rule out cooperation with Lyutvi Mestan, who was removed as DPS leader and expelled from the party last week.

Mestan was accused by the party's honorary chair Ahmed Dogan of serving Turkish interests and failing to defend Bulgarian ones, in a tense environment where the EU has lost its way and cannot be reliable.

Dal, for his part, was formerly one of the key members of the DPS alongside Dogan. In 2011, he quit the DPS over tensions with the honorary chair and counded the National Freedom and Dignity Party (NPSD), which is part of the junior coalition partner Reformist Bloc.

On Sunday he was quoted by 24rodopi.com as saying he would like to see what steps Mestan would take and then decide on possible cooperation.

The website 24rodopi.com came to the spotlight early last week after reporting of Dogan's criticism for Mestan during a New Year address before DPS members.

After Mestan's expulsion from the DPS, several lawmakers announced they were leaving their parliamentary group and a key official in Kardzhali, Southern Bulgaria, announced he was quitting the party.
