Traffic police estimates that more than 200 000 vehicles will leave the Bulgarian capital of Sofia on Wednesday and Thursday as the great travel for the forthcoming holidays begins.

The heaviest traffic is expected on Tsarigradsko shose and Botevgradsko shose - the two main boulevards leading out of Sofia and connecting to respectively Trakia and Hemus motorways, as well as on Sofia ring road.

Traffic policemen will regulate traffic on all key roads and exits of Sofia.

Across the country, the heaviest traffic is expected on motorways and first class roads, especially those leading to Greece.

Traffic police estimates that 150 000 vehicles will head to Greece.

Traffic is also expected to intensify towards the Black Sea coast and the winter resorts.

Heightened police presence will monitor for violations such as speeding.

Authorities will also make sure that vehicles are adequately prepared for the winter, with policemen to inspection tyres, lights and windscreen wipers.

The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) assured on Tuesday that no roads will be closed for repair works during the holiday period.

All repairs on Trakia and Hemus motorways that have been carried out during the summer and autumn have been completed and the renovated sections have been opened.

The movement of heavy trucks with a weight of more than 12 tonnes will be temporarily suspended with such suspensions to be in force on December 23, December 27, December 30 and January 3.
