Bulgaria can use Iran as a doorway into other markets to sell its goods there, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov has said while on a two-day visit to Tehran.

Mitov made his comments after meetings with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and, later with the country's ministers of transportation and culture, Abbas Akhoundi and Ali Jannati, respectively.

Earlier in the autumn, an Iranian diplomat suggested Bulgaria might become a corridor helping Iranian goods to reach the European Union.

Alongside political dialogue and projects of common interest, conflict in the Middle East and the fate of migrants topped the agenda of meetings.

Energy cooperation and the development of transport corridors (such as a project that would link Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan (or Armenia) and Iran, were also discussed.

In October, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed that paved the way for the opening of a corridor that would bypass Turkey to avoid the risk of terrorist attacks.

On Sunday, Mitov met the Islamic Republic's President, Hassan Rouhani, with the two also focusing on gas and transport links.
