Frontex Triples Staff at Bulgarian-Turkish Border Amid Joint Operation
Frontex and "Border police" have launched a joint operation aimed at tripling the number of EU border guards along the Bulgarian-Turkish border
Developments relating to the judicial reform in Bulgaria and a project to build a gas hub were on the agenda of a meeting of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.
The meeting comes after Bulgarian lawmakers approved all but two sections of a judicial reform proposal submitted by junior coalition partner Reformist Bloc. Separately Bulgaria's government announced, jointly with the European Commission, that workgroup would be set up on the construction of a gas distribution center that was officially dubbed "Balkan".
"This hub and the interconnectors we are building will guarantee real diversification of sources and routes for gas supply," the government's press office quotes Borisov as saying.
Merkel and Borisov also discussed the measures introduced by Bulgaria to boost border control as part of the EU's reinforced response to the migrant crisis.
EU leaders are discussing migration and border control at a Brussels summit on Thursday and Friday, following a proposal by the EU Commission that a new agency should be set up as a successor to Frontex boost security at the EU's external borders (such as the one between Bulgaria and Turkey).
