Bulgaria: Bulgaria Police, NYPD to Expand Anti-crime Cooperation

Bulgaria and New York City police will beef up cooperation in preventing and combating cross-border crime, the Bulgarian government has said.

The cabinet has approved a draft memorandum of understanding between Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry and the New York City Police Department, which will be signed during the ongoing visit of Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov to the United States, the government said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The signing of the memorandum will upgrade and expand the existing bilateral cooperation, enabling the two countries to contribute to the efforts of the international community in the fight against crime,” according to the statement.

Kostov is paying a working visit to the United States Monday through Friday.

During the first day of his visit  Kostov met with the FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano to discuss cooperation on operational level in fighting terrorism, illegal migration and cybercrime, the Interior Ministry said in a separate statement.

Kostov also met with Assistant Secretary of State and Director of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security  Gregory Starr as well as top officials of the Secret Service.

Meetings with officials of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) are also on the agenda of Kostov’s visit.
