The migration crisis in Europe, control of the EU’s external borders and bilateral and regional economic links have been in the focus of a meeting between Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos in Sofia on Monday.
Pavlopoulos' official visit to Bulgaria – the first country in southeastern Europe which he is visiting since his election as Greece’s head of state in February – is seen by both countries as an important political signal highlighting the strategic nature of their relationship, according to a news release issued by the Bulgarian government press office.
Borisov and Pavlopoulos agreed that Bulgaria and Greece, which form part of EU’s external border, are faced with common problems posed by the migration crisis in Europe – a fact that requires both countries to seek resolution of those problems in the spirit of solidarity and pragmatism, the release said.
Sofia and Athens believe EU member states should agree on clear common rules about how to handle the migration crisis, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said earlier on Monday following a separate meeting his Greek counterpart.
Pavlopoulos and Borisov estimated as successful the cooperation between law enforcement agencies of Bulgaria and Greece as well as the results achieved under the agreement for cooperation among police and customs authorities of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey signed in May.
Economic cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece is expanding, with the latest piece of evidence being the signing of the final investment decision for the construction of an interconnector linking the gas transmission systems of the two countries, Borisov and Pavlopoulos noted during their meeting.
"This is a project of strategic importance not only for Bulgaria and Greece, but for the entire region of southeastern Europe," Borisov said, according to the news release.
