Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said that ‘terrorists’  who occupy parts of the country must be defeated first to enable the start of political negotiations, AP reported.

In an interview shown Italian state TV channel RAI Uno on Wednesday night al-Assad said that "nothing can start before defeating the terrorists who occupy parts of Syria."

This is the first official comment of al-Assad about a plan unveiled by global and regional powers in Vienna last Saturday.

The plan of the Syria International Support Group calls for  negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition.

The negotiations should start by January 1, 2016 at the latest and lead to a transitional government and possibly elections within 18 months after that.

If the Syrian people want presidential elections "there will be no red line" against holding them, al-Assad said in the interview.
