Bulgaria: Bulgaria Sinks in 2015 Prosperity Index's Personal Freedom Ranking

Bulgaria has ranked worse in the 2015 Legatum Prosperity Index than did last year, losing three spots.

The Prosperity Index uses "both income and wellbeing" indicators to measure prosperity, focusing on criteria as diverse as social capital, personal freedom, safety and security, health, education, governance, and entrepreneurship, apart from economy statistics.

In 2015, the country is 51st out of 142 countries monitored.

Neighboring Greece has ranked 49th, followed by Romania (50th).

Bulgaria is followed by Croatia (53rd), Montenegro (60th), Macedonia (65th), Serbia (73rd), Turkey (78th), Albania (83rd), and Bosnia-Herzegovina (86th). Kosovo is not included in the ranking.

Its best ranking (42nd) was in "Safety and Security". However,  it is also one of the fields where its performance deteriorated considerably over the course of the year - in 2014, Bulgaria was No. 33.

On the other hand, it is Personal Freedom where the country has scored its worst result among all criteria (96th) and deteriorated the most compared to 2014, when it was 72nd.

"Personal Freedom" is described as the answer to the following question: "Does freedom of expression, belief, association, and personal autonomy promote higher income and wellbeing? And does tolerance of immigrants and minorites affect prosperity?"

In "Entrepreneurship & Opportunity", it ranks 43rd (42nd in 2014).

In "Economy" it is 79th this year, three spots up from 2014 (82nd).

"Governance" is also where Bulgaria has slumped in a year, 81st in 2015 and 74th in 2014.

"Education" has improved as the country ranks 44th (it was 48th in 2014).

In "Health" Bulgaria is a spot down (48th) compared to 2014.

The country has significantly improved in terms of "Social capital" ("What kind of social networks, relationships, and institutions are associated with higher levels of wellbeing and national income?") and has ranked 67th in 2015, compared to its 87th place last year.

This is what Bulgaria's 2010 ranking looked like

Overall, Bulgaria was 48th last year, with most Southeastern European countries also having performed slightly better.
