Poland's largest opposition Law and Justice party (Pis) won the parliamentary elections, which were held in the country on Sunday.

According to exit polls, the conservatives have won 39 % of the votes, which will be enough for the party to govern on its own, the BBC informs.

Former Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who is leader of PiS, claimed victory, while Ewa Kopacz, incumbent Prime Minister and leader of the centrist Civic Platform (PO), admitted defeat.

Kaczynski is not running for prime minister himself and has instead nominated Beata Szydlo.

However some observers had hinted that Kaczynski will assume the position if his party achieves a convincing victory.
