According to the latest exit polls, Yordanka Fandakova, the incumbent mayor of Sofia and candidate of the largest ruling GERB party, was reelected to a third consecutive term with 60 % of the votes in the local elections held in Bulgaria on Sunday.

Fandakova was born in the town of Samokov in 1962 and she graduated in the Russian language high school in Sofia and later obtained a degree in Russian language at Sofia University.

For thirteen years, between 1985 and 1998, she worked as a teacher at the 73rd high school in Sofia and then for seven years until 2005 she served as the principal of the same school.

In 2005, upon the election of incumbent Prime Minister Boyko Borisov as mayor of Sofia, Fandakova was appointed as Deputy Mayor in charge of education, youth, culture and science.

She held the position until July 2009 when Borisov was reelected to his first term as prime minister.

She served for several months as Education Minister in the first Borisov cabinet before running in the by-elections for mayor of Sofia in November 2009.

Fandakova won the elections with 67 % of the votes, becoming the first female mayor of Sofia, who was reelected to a second term in 2011.

Upon completion of her third term in 2019, Fandakova will become the longest serving mayor of the Bulgarian capital since Ivan Ivanov who ruled between between 1934 and 1944.

Among the main priorities of her third four-year term will be: mass sports activity in the neighbourhoods; energy efficiency measures; building new kindergartens; the construction of a new section of the underground; renovation of public transport vehicles.
