According to the latest figures of Alpha Research polling agency, the voter turnout in the referendum on the introduction of remote electronic voting, which is taking place in Bulgaria simultaneously with the local elections on Sunday, has reached 35.3 % as of 18 o’clock EET.

The turnout has already surpassed the voter turnout at the last referendum held in Bulgaria in 2013, which stood at slightly above 20 %.

As the turnout has surpassed the 20 % thresold and if it turns out that more than half of the people have voted with "yes", this will oblige parliament to review the proposal and deliver a decision within three months.

In order for the outcome of the referendum to become compulsory, more than three and a half million people should have cast a ballot and more than half of them should have voted with "yes".

According to the same polling agency, the voter turnout in the local elections stood at 46.5 % as of 18 o'clock EET.

The Central Election Commission (CIK) continues to be experiencing problems with its website which is slowing down the publishing of figures on the voter turnout as the data has to be collected over the phone.
