Voter activity was nearing 20% in a national referendum Bulgaria is holding alongside local elections, a polling agency has said.

Bulgarians are asked to have a say on whether online voting should be allowed as a recognized method in elections and nationwide polls.

"This activity is twice the activity we observed at the same time during the previous referendum in 2013, but is a little lower than the one we are having at the local vote, which is at 23.4%," a representative of polling agency AFIS has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

In his words, the turnout is expected to grow faster over the course of the next hours. As of 13:00 EET, some 85% of local election voers also cast a ballot in the referendum, he added.
