Bulgaria invested much in fulfilling the demands of Western Europe, PM Boyko Borisov said on Sunday.

"Bulgaria was among the nations with a strong chemical industry, but our factories polluted the environment and we stopped them. Our country had [more] thermal power plants that it closed down upon its accession into the EU," he added after voting in local elections and a national referendum.

His comments followed remarks by Dutch PM Mark Rutte, who told the country's public TV the day before that Eastern Europe was not doing enought to halt the migrant influx.

He then also underlined the substantial investment made by Western European nations into eastern neighbors to help them tackle the migrant crisis.

A summit of Southeastern European leaders is due in Brussels on Sunday evening, with heads of government meeting EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Chancellors of Germany and Austria.
