Bulgaria: LinkedIn Received 2 Data Requests from Bulgaria in Q1, 2015 Print screen

Bulgaria has sent two of the total 112 user data requests received by social network LinkedIn in the first six months of this year, an official report reads.

Authorities in Sofia have been granted access to one of the two accounts they have asked about.

This makes Bulgaria one of the few countries which submitted requests over the respective period.

The bulk of requests (99) came from the US, which demanded access to 141 accounts (and was granted one for 78% of them).

Next is India with 4 separate filings, followed by Bulgaria, Canada, France, and the UK (2 each) and Spain (only one filing).

"We never provide data to a government to fulfill a member data request without first trying to notify the individual member, except in those cases when applicable law or a court order prohibits us from providing notice, or in certain emergencies," LinkedIn explains.

"For the six-month period between January 1 and June 30, 2015, we received requests for less than .0000005% of our over 300 million LinkedIn members," it goes on.

Governments make requests for member data for a variety of reasons, including to gather evidence as part of criminal investigations.
