The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Monday that Princeton University professor Angus Deaton has won the 2015 Nobel prize in economic sciences.

Deaton, 69, has been awarded the prize for "his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare”, the Academy said.

The prize-awarding body also said that Deaton's research “has greatly influenced both practical policymaking as well as the scientific community” and “concerns issues of immense importance for human welfare, not least in poor countries".

Deaton holds a dual U.S. and British citizenship. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and now works at Princeton University in New Jersey, U.S.

“The consumption of goods and services is a fundamental part of people’s welfare. The Laureate, Angus Deaton, has deepened our understanding of different aspects of consumption,” the Academy said.
