President Rosen Plevneliev has stressed the need of coordinated international action to tackle the migrant crisis.
Speaking at an international forum in Sofia, Bulgaria's head of state has warned that "every new piece of fence, two-way border blockades, barbed wire, water cannons and tear gas used against refugees - and this [is happening] in the hear of Europe."
"The EU is standing against its own rules... against itself," the Bulgarian National Radio quotes him as saying.
The head of state already voiced that position about the migrant crisis while addressing the United Nations General Assembly last week.
Plevneliev, who has been an outspoken critic of Russia's policies over Ukraine and a set of other issues, has also argued of what he describes as "cold peace" in the new phase of political confrontation after the Ukraine crisis.
He has opined that Russia is "applying a spheres of influence policy" that was quite used in the 19th century and which "precisely... caused two world wars to break out here, in Europe."
"Moscow is placing the Balkans in the center of its geopolitical interests. History has taught it is through the Balkans that Europe can be destabilized in the easiest way."
In his words, Europe should stop looking at its southeast as a "periphery", but more as a "center of geopolitical interests and policies."
