Bulgaria's Interior Minister has called the prospective accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen borderless area "a matter of security for the entire European Union".

In a statement after reports that the two countries' entry into the area would be postponed in view of the current migrant crisis, Bachvarova has told the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union that that only through both states' accession will the EU concept of security be complete.

In her words, it is the "frontline states" (among which she placed Bulgaria) that are affected by the migrant crisis.

EU Interior Ministers are meeting on Thursday to discuss security issues stemming from the surge in migrants into Europe this summer.
