Historic Centre of Edinburgh Counts Cost of Fire

Firefighters in the Scottish city of Edinburgh are still tackling a fire that could take days more to put out. The blaze swept through the city's historic Old Town area on Saturday evening but firefighters remain at the scene to douse the pockets of fire still burning in the complex network of business and residential properties that make up the district. The final cost is likely to be the equivalent of "many millions" of euro, according to a spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade. Much of the district dates back three hundred years and it is designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations but many buildings have been gutted beyond restoration.
