Deputy Prime Minister Ivaylo Kalfin called on the EU to bring changes to its policies addressing the refugee wave.

In an interview for private bTV station on Wednesday, he noted that Bulgaria was dealing with the refugees according to its capabilities.

Kalfin added that the funds on the refugees were allocated from both the government budget and the EU.

He described the refugees as people who are in temporary need of accommodation and warm lunch.

According to him, it was better for society to secure the basic needs of these people rather than leave them wandering on the streets without being accommodated.

In his words, the European policy on migration should not be directed at solving crises, but rather at averting them.

At present Europe was stimulating migrants able to pay for being trafficked to Europe and having preference for their destination rather than the poor refugees fleeing war and having nowhere else to go.

Kalfin stated that there was need for considerable changes to the EU policies on refugees from Africa and the Middle East.

He stated that the Dublin regulation and the agreements with third countries on the readmission of refugees should be renegotiated and the EU should forge a unified position.

The proposed quotas should be reviewed in order to take into account the situation in each of the member states.

Kalfin added that dealing with the problem should be relocated outside Europe, as close as possible to the areas of conflict.

According to him, a pressure on the labour market was already being felt.

The deputy prime minister called on Europe to update the list of the safe countries of origin and reform the Schengen agreement.
