Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev will veto the recent amendments to the Military Intelligence Act.

This was announced by the chief of the presidential cabinet, Ekaterina Zaharieva, in an interview for private bTV station on Wednesday.

Zaharieva explained that the amendments will be vetoed as the newly imposed requirements limit the number of people eligible to become director of the Defence Information Service.

The parliament approved the amendments to the Military Intelligence Act on October 1, making the incumbent Director of the Defence Information Service, Yordan Bakalov, no longer eligible to hold the position.

Under the new requirements, the director of the service must have more than ten years of experience in the national security system and to be an Armed Forces officer on active duty.

The amendments were proposed by the largest opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and were supported by some MPs from the main ruling GERB party.

Bakalov was appointed to the position in May after having served as Interior Minister in the caretaker government of Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki.

He submitted his resignation on Monday, but Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev, who had expressed firm support for Bakalov by calling on the president to veto the amendments, rejected his resignation on the same day.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov also expressed his support for Bakalov and promised to hold talks with the parliamentary group of GERB to find out why some of the MPs voted in favour of the amendments.
