Russian President Vladimir Putin and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras have confirmed in a phone conversation they would work to increase bilateral cooperation.

The Kremlin's press service has pointed out that Putin and Tsipras have affirmed their interest in "deepening further cooperation in all directions, including in the energy sphere."

This comes as Russia is planning to build the so-called Turkish Stream pipeline and has agreed with Greece to construct a leg reaching the country if the project is put in place.

Moscow and Ankara, however, are so far unable to agree on when and how to start Turkish Stream amid a dispute over gas discount prices.

In their phone call, Putin also congratulated Tsipras on his return to the Prime Minister's office following early elections in Greece last Sunday.
