There would be a surge in right-wing extremism across Europe unless the migrant crisis isn't tackled properly, the European Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans warned on Thursday.
‘Sustainable solutions’ to the migrant crisis are needed, Timmermans told the BBC radio.
"If we're not able to tackle this issue, if we're not able to find sustainable solutions, you will see a surge of the extreme right across the European continent," he said.
The European Union should ensure better protection of its borders to deal with the influx of migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
"We have to make sure that those countries where people arrive are better placed to make sure people are registered, that people who don't have the right to asylum are returned swiftly," Timmermans said.
He spoke a day after EU leaders agreed to provide at least EUR 1B for Syrian refugees in the Middle East to stem the migrant influx from the war-torn country.
At an informal summit in Brussels on Wednesday the EU leaders also agreed to increase aid to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and other countries neighbouring Syria where most refugees and migrants come from.
Other measures agreed include increased cooperation with Turkey and extending additional assistance to Balkan countries, who have become a major route for migrants trying to reach western Europe.
