The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday it has established a child-friendly space with a mobile team near the Macedonian town of Geveglija to provide support to migrant women and children transiting the country.

The child-friendly space, which can support about 50 children at one time, has been established within the compounds of the migrant rest area created by UNHCR at the town, which lies at Macedonia’s southern border with Greece, UNICEF said in a news release.

Over the last month the daily rate of migrants transiting through Macedonia has increased to 1,500-2,000, of which about a third are women and children, UNICEF said. The migrants, most of them refugees fleeing war in Syria, arrive from from Greece and transit Macedonia en route to Serbia and Hungary

“At greatest risk are migrant children travelling alone without parents or adult family members,” the UN Children’s Fund said.

Up to 3,000 migrants are expected to cross into Macedonia every day in the coming months, the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Tuesday.
