Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova has insisted that the country’s border authorities exercise rigorous oversight.

In a Tuesday interview for the morning broadcast of Nova TV she noted that the refugee crisis was the biggest challenge for Europe since the beginning of the century.

She claimed that the re-direction of refugees flows via Macedonia had been expected, taking into account the fact that the route via Italy had been restricted.

Bachvarova, as cited by dnevnik.bg, made clear that the Bulgarian authorities had drafted a plan envisaging concrete steps under three possible scenarios.

She argued that the worst-case option involved a refugee wave of the proportions Macedonia was currently facing.
Bulgaria’s Interior Minister pointed out that the worst-case scenario was relatively unlikely to take place.

She underscored that Bulgarian borders were guarded efficiently, adding that the country was not an attractive destination for refugees because they were not sure whether they would be able to reach their final goal.

Bachvarova reminded that the Armed Forces would help the Border Police at Bulgaria’s western border as of Tuesday.

Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev specified in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio that a total of 25 troops would be dispatched to Bulgaria’s western border.
