The largest military training of NATO in Europe since the end of the Cold War – Swift Response 2015 will feature night airborne landings in Bulgaria.
An airborne landing with parachute drops and descent of equipment will take place after 21 o'clock on Monday in the areas around the airports of Tenevo and Balchik and Novo Selo Training Area.
The simultaneous multinational airborne training Swift Response is being held on Bulgarian territory between August 20 and September 13, the defence ministry's press service informs.
Up to 400 servicemen from the land forces of Bulgaria, Italy and the US as well as the air forces of Bulgaria and the US will participate in the airborne landings.
Up to 12 units of transport and specialised equipment, up to twelve C-130 aircraft and up to 12 HH-60 and UH-60 helicopters will be used in the airborne landing.
Night flights at altitudes ranging from 450 to 1000 metres will also be conducted south of the town of Yambol, in the vicinity of the villages of Tenevo and Karavelovo.
It is possible that the noise from the aircraft will disrupt the residents of the nearby inhabited places.
The airborne landing will contribute to reaching operational compatibility between the participating armed forces.
More than 4800 troops from eleven member countries of NATO will participate in Swift Response, which is taking place in Bulgaria, Romania, Germany and Italy between August 17 and September 13.
The culmination of the training is expected to be on Wednesday, when simultaneous airborne joint forced entries into Novo Selo Training Area and Germany's Hohenfels Training Area are scheduled to take place.
