Bulgaria: Russia Says It Destroyed Nearly 600 T of Imported Food in 10 Days A handout picture made available on 07 August 2015 by Bryansk & Smolensk Department of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) shows a bulldozer pressing packages with supposed embargoed tomatoes at the ground

Russia has destroyed some 597 tonnes of food products illegally imported from blacklisted countries since August 6, statistics show.

A message dated August 15 and available on the website of Rosselkhoznadzor, the country's food safety watchdog, reads [RU] that "to date" some 550 tons of agricultural products have been detained and liquidated.

Another 321 tons of animal food products have been detained, 47 of them destroyed ("including 576 kg of output illegally carried in hand luggage", the message also says.)

A decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 6 coincided with the anniversary of Moscow's decision to ban food imports from a host of countries, including EU member states and the US, along with others supporting the sanctions  imposed on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Earlier this week Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced his country had added five more European (non-EU) states to the ban, namely Albania, Montenegro, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Ukraine "under certain conditions".
