The likelihood of early elections in Turkey has increased after the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) failed to agree to form a coalition government, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Thursday.
"We have come to the conclusion that the groundwork for a government partnership has not materialized," Davutoglu said at a news converence at the AKP headquarters in Ankara, according to Anadolu Agency.
Negotiations have failed due to deep differences, “mainly in foreign policy and education", he said.
CHP has rejected the AKP offer to form an interim coalition cabinet that will govern only until new elections are held, Davutoglu added.
While leaving the door open for talks with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Davutoglu said that early election “is a strong possibility” with 10 days to go before the deadline for forming a coalition government expires.
Davutoglu’s AKP lost its overall majority after the June election but remains the largest party in Turkey’s parliament, holding 258 of the 550 seats in the chamber.
CHP has 132 deats, and MHP and the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) hold 80 seats each.
