A US F-16 jet fighter crashed in Germany’s Bavaria state on Tuesday but the pilot safely ejected, the U.S. Air Force said. 

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. An investigation has been launched.

The crash happened during a training flight, the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany where the fighter aircraft was based, said in a statement.

The pilot was taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to German television channel TVO.

The crash site was in a wooded area difficult to reach near Engelmannreuth, in the county of Bayreuth.
