Turkish police have detained an individual linked to a Monday attack by two assailants against the US consular service in Istanbul, news websites say.

Apart from one of the assailants, a woman, no-one else has been injured in the attack on Monday morning.

US officials have said on Twitter they are "working with Turkish authorities to investigate".

The consulate is closed to the public until further notice.

Monday's incident comes just hours after a car bomb went off in the suburb of Sultanbeyli, damaging a police station.

It also follows the deployment on Sunday of six US fighter jets to the Turkish air base of Incirlik, from where they are expected to help Turkey in the fight against militant group Islamic State (IS).
