Germany's Federal Attorney General Harald Range has stopped a treason investigation against the media outlet Netzpolitik.org, daily Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung reports.

He reportedly agreed with Justice Minister Heiko Maas that information disclosed by two journalists from the website about plans to step up mass surveillance in the country did not constitute a breach of the German Criminal Code.

This comes after a week of tension between Range and Maas. The prosecutor warned that the minister was siding with journalists by trying to stop the probe.

Maas said he was sacking the Attorney General by officially making the proposal to the country's president, but later backtracked.
