Bulgaria: Inactivity Rate of Young People in Bulgaria at nearly 73% in 2014

The inactivity rate of young people aged 15-24 in the EU-28 varied from 32.6% in the Netherlands and 38% in Denmark to nearly 73% in Bulgaria and Italy, according to Eurostat data for 2014.

Around 58% of the men and women in this age group, or 32,4 million people in the EU-28, were economically inactive during that time.

One of the most important reasons behind this rate of economic inactivity is the fact that the people in this age group prefer to devote their time to education rather than to work, according to reports of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

Around 16,6 million women and 15,8 million men were economically inactive in 2014 in the EU-28.

Around 28 million of young Europeans aged 15-24 are not interested in working at all, while 2 million would like to work but they are not looking for a job, and the remainder are willing to start a job but not immediately.

According to official data of Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute (NSI), there were slightly more than 718 000 young people aged 15-24 in Bulgaria at the end of 2014.

According to calculations provided by the BTA, based on university admissions numbers and high-school graduation rates, around 500 000 young people aged up to 24 neither worked nor studied.

According to data provided by experts, the ratio of overall youth unemployment to long-term youth unemployment stood at 3:1 in 2014 in the age group 15-24, meaning that one in every three young people in the EU was a long-term unemployed person.

In Bulgaria the ratio was closer to 2:1, meaning that one in every two young people in the country was a long-term unemployed person.
