The drop in the water levels is hampering the sailing on the Danube river near the Bulgarian town of Belene.

Tens of cargo ships have been waiting near Belene in order to make the passage through the shallow waters, private bTV station informs.

The lack of precipitation in the upper course of the river is complicating the situation in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the river.

Freighters, which can not make the passage have to reload their cargo, which leads to additional expenses on fuel, labour and supply time for the shipowners.

Officials from the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River and their Romanian colleagues are searching for alternative routes around Belene in order to ease the sailing.

The forecasts are not optimistic, as the level of the water is expected to decrease further.

There is no limitation on the sailing of passenger ships.
