The municipality of Harmanli in southern Bulgaria declared on Thursday a state of emergency due to the wildfire, which has been raging in the region for a second consecutive day.

The wildfire has engulfed forest, grass and bushes, spreading between the villages of Mladinovo, Dripchevo, Oryahovo and Izvorovo.

There is no direct threat for the inhabitants of the surrounding settlements, but taming of the fire remains difficult due to its constantly changing direction and the poor accessibility of the area.

The fire was reportedly caused by a spark while a tractor was cultivating a pasture, private bTV station informs.

The police is searching for the suspected perpetrator, who fled the area instead of attempting to extinguish the fire.

More than a hundred people have been working on taming the wildfire, including 35 servicemen with military equipment.
