Bulgaria: UN Security Council Approves Iran Nuclear Deal UN photo

The United Nations Security Council endorsed a resolution on Monday that clears a path for the lifting of international economic sanctions against Iran, newswires reported.

The document, which was approved unanimously by the 15 members of the Security Council and is legally binding, sets the stage for the gradual termination of UN resolutions adopted since 2006 to impose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Monday’s resolution lays out the steps required only for the lifting of UN sanctions but it has no legal force on the penalties imposed separately by the United States and the European Union.

A landmark agreement to curb Iran's nuclear programme in return for lifting sanctions that have crippled the country’s economy was reached last week in Vienna between Tehran  and the so-called P5+1 group – the five permanent members of the UN Security Council Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany.

Under the deal, Tehran has agreed to long-term restrictions on its nuclear programme which the West suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb. Iran is saying the programme is peaceful.

The Security Council will be able to re-impose UN sanctions during the next decade if Iran fails to meet its obligations under the deal.

The European Union will keep its ban on the supply of ballistic missile technology and sanctions related to human rights, according to EU diplomats.
