Greek police have arrested a 58-year old Bulgarian on suspicion of accidentally starting a wildfire in the in the northeastern Athens district of Kareas, AFP reported on Saturday.

A 67-year old Greek national was also arrested on the same suspicion. The names of the two men were not disclosed.  

Citing information from the Greek fire department, AFP said the wildfire broke out on Friday and quickly spread across an area of several kilometres, threatening homes in another three districts before it was brought under control.

Firefighters battled more than 50 fire fronts, mainly in southern Greece and near Athens on Friday.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said the government had requested help from the army and air force, as well as the European emergency response centre, to fight the fires aggravated by strong winds and high temperatures.
