French President Francois Hollande awarded the highest decoration in France - the Order of Legion of Honour to UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
Bokova was awarded the third highest degree of the Order - Commandeur (Commander) at a special ceremony in the Elysee Palace on Friday, daily Sega reports.
The ceremony was attended by numerous officials and guests, including French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and the husband of Bokova – Kalin Mitrev.
Bokova was awarded the distinction for her contribution towards fighting illiteracy and fanaticism, the empowerment of women and girls through education, for safeguarding the cultural heritage especially in conflict-ridden countries, such as Mali, Syria and Iraq.
Hollande also highlighted the contribution of Bokova towards deepening the relations between Bulgaria and France during her time as a former Bulgarian Ambassador to Paris.
The French President noted that UNESCO and France shared the same universal values such as human rights, human dignity, tolerance, respect for cultural diversity, education for peace and sustainable development.
Hollande said that Bokova was an example for all women around the world, who have the courage to assume responsibilities.
