Police in Brussels have intercepted a drug trafficking channel through which ecstasy pills were imported from Bulgaria.

The drug trafficking channel was detected on a tip-off of a woman who had suffered systematic abuse by her husband for years on end, according to reports of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency based on local media outlets.

The nationality of the couple is not specified but the man is said to be officially involved in the construction business.

The couple had three children.

According to the data collected during the investigation so far, the drug trafficking channel existed at least since end-2014 and the ecstasy pills were sold by Bulgarian prostitutes working in Brussels.

The husband of the woman who filed a complaint with the police had only a middleman in the distribution chain, while another man had delivered the drugs to Belgium, local police said.

The alleged intermediary was arrested and charged with illegal possession of illegal substances obviously earmarked for sale.

He was subsequently released from custody on the basis of a court decision.
