Ivan Iskrov had been reelected on his position as a Chair of the Bulgarian National Bank under pressure during the first Boiko Borisov cabinet.

The statement was made by Former Finance Minister Simeon Djankov in an interview for bTV, who was in office at the time.

‘’Up until the very last day while the debate was ongoing, another person had been the leading candidate,’’ Djankov said. ‘’The candidate was Kalin Hristov and he had the support both of GERB as a political party and of the Ministry in particular.’’

In the words of the former minister, a key notable political opposition figure at the time took control over the situation and overturned the result of the vote. He did not mention the exact name but said that it had been ‘’quite clear who the active people in Parliament were back in 2009’’.

Dyankov added that the crisis with Corporate Commercial Bank had been completely a result of the overlooking on the part of Iskrov as the role of the central bank is to keep bank stability.

He shared some more memories of his time in office, including the fact that he and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov held meetings every morning and evening to discuss the fiscal discipline and the possible accession of Bulgaria in the Eurozone.

Asked about his position on the results from referendum held in Greece Sunday, Djankov stated that nothing will effectively change after it. He added that neither Greece nor the EU would like to see Bulgaria’s southern neighbor out of the Eurozone.

He further prognozed that a certain amount of the Greek debt will most probably need to be forgiven as Greece had been living over the limit of its financial capabilities in the past 30 years and that process cannot be overturned by one or two governments.

In his opinion, there will be no huge wave of Bulgarians currently residing in Greece who might decide to come back to Bulgaria. They would probably like to wait for further developments of the situation.
