Today's Quote: Military Tourism
"Imagine a German reading a tourism ad about Bulgaria with a report on the next page about deployment of heavy equipment. Perhaps Bulgaria has to introduce military tourism and to promote it among Europeans."
Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader Mihail Mikov commenting on the government's support for the deployment of heavy weapons to Bulgaria and five other Eastern European NATO states. Socialists have called for the government to shed more light on plans to station equipment which have been marked by controversial positions of Bulgarian officials.
Mr Mikov makes an interesting point. But seeing this from the UK, I don't think this is a real issue. Bulgaria is perceived here as a stable country and I would acknowledge the BSP as playing a part in maintaining that stability. No worries about the military hardware either. If anything, it shows an intent to remain stable.
Bulgaria is a great holiday destination. When I went earlier this year, there were military exercises, which did not bother me - I just thought Bulgaria was being wise. This year, some will choose Bulgaria in preference to Greece, because they can be sure that the cash machines will work. And as things are at the moment, the military activity is a much smaller matter for concern.
