Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov called on Thursday for European support in order for the country to be able to deal with the migratory pressure it has been faced with.

Borisov noted that the country has allocated considerable resources to deal with the influx and pointed that a decision has already been taken to help Greece, Italy and Spain to address this issue, so it was fair for a similar one to be provided to Bulgaria.

Borisov announced that he will champion the necessity for providing support to Bulgaria at the forthcoming European Council summit.

He said that following the serious measures taken to decrease refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the migrants have redirected themselves to entering the EU through the Bulgarian land border.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister stated that this led to posting of police officers to the border on a daily basis and the increase of expenses to guard it, but to no avail.

He reminded that at the previous cabinet meeting, the government allocated BGN 30 M for the fence at the border with Turkey.

Borisov highlighted that it was important for solving the problems of the countries from which refugees originated, otherwise the influx would continue.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister also commented the situation in Greece, noting that the European Union (EU) has been dealing with the country' problems for years.

Borisov called on Greece to comply with the Maastricht criteria and to implement the necessary reforms.

He said that other member states also had problems, but their issues were not often addressed as Greece frequently occupied the EU agenda.

Borisov reminded that Bulgaria restored its deficit under the 3 % threshold and at the same time the country held BGN 11 B in its fiscal reserve, which was an attestation for the stability of its currency.

Similarly to Greece, Bulgaria wanted to allocate more funds to wages and pensions, but the country also had to comply with the fiscal discipline.

Borisov expressed his firm opposition towards postponements and compromises, but at the same time assured that Bulgaria wanted to help Greece as it was of its own and regional interest to have stable neighbours.
