The 100 biggest companies in Bulgaria accounted for 80 percent of the country's economic output in 2014, statistics suggest.

Some BGN 65 B (EUR 33.2 B) were generated by the "top 100" last year, in a country whose gross domestic product is around BGN 82 B.

According to calculations made by experts at the request of 24 Hours daily, based on information from the National Revenue Agency and other sources, the ten largest companies' revenues were worth BGN 23 B, which corresponded to BGN 168 M in corporate tax for 2014.

Last year some of the leaders in various markets grew by 170% over 12 months, whereas GDP growth was below 1%.

Sofia-based entities hold the biggest share in Bulgaria's economy (at around 43%).
