A man driving an SUV crashed into a crowd in the downtown area of Graz, killing at least three and injuring dozens, Austria's Die Presse said.

Police have arrested the driver. Some reports cited by Die Presse suggest he was armed with a knife. His motives are not yet known.

He was reportedly driving at 100 km/h through a downtown area where many cafeterias have their tables in the streets.

"Corpses are lying in the street," a witness reported minutes after the development.

According to Der Standard, the street into which the SUV drove "was full, it was a sunny Saturday, many people were sitting in the cafeterias."

A street passing in parallel to the one where the crash occurred is the key area for shopping and the most important pedestrian area in Graz, Austria's second-largest city.
