Bulgaria's chess grandmaster Veselin Topalov started his participation at the Norway Chess Supertournament , which is taking place in Stavanger between June 15 and 26, with a victory.

Topalov, who played with the black pieces, defeated on Tuesday Norwegian chess grandmaster and reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen on time.

Carlsen, who is first in the FIDE world ranking, was in a completely winning position, but lost after failing to realise there was no more additional time after sixty moves.

In the second round, Topalov, who is ranked fifth in the FIDE world ranking, will face Nakamura Hikaru from the USA, the Bulgarian starting with the white pieces.
