The Bulgarian city of Ruse hosts an international sand sculpture festival dedicated to cinema between June 9 and 20.

A total of 613 tonnes of sand will be crafted into ten sculptures, each measuring two metres in height, daily Dnevnik reports.

The sculptures will represent famous actors and fictional characters, such as Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Spiderman, Indiana Jones and Prometheus.

Cinema was chosen as the theme of the festival in order to mark the first film screening in Bulgaria, which took place in Ruse on 27 February 1897 and the 120th anniversary of cinema, which is celebrated in 2015.

Ten sculptors from seven countries – Bulgaria, Russia, Japan, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine participate in the festival.

The sculptures will be located at the quay on the Danube river and the audience will be able to observe the work of the artists.

The mayor of Ruse Plamen Stoilov unveiled the festival on Tuesday, saying that it was a continuation of the successful Ruse ice festival in 2014.
