The first initiative of the local government to tear down illegal Roma buildings took place in July 2014. In the words of mayor Zhivko Todorov all owners have appealed the decision for tearing up their houses and will have the same opportunity now. In his words, there currently are more than 300 buildings constructed illegally on the territory of a park.
According to architect Veselin Berov very few of the Roma buildings have building permits and legal documents. However, in his words, a brand new system should be implemented to prevent illegal construction practices, while still providing suitable living conditions for underprivileged people.
