The record 86% voter turnout in Turkey's parliamentary elections on Sunday is a clear sign of strength of the country’s democracy, the European Commission has said.

The big winner in the election was the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), which entered the parliament for the first time as a single party. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won most votes but remained short of outright majority in the 550-seat parliament.

“The fact that all major political parties obtained representation in the new parliament is particularly important,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said in a joint statement on Monday.

The Commission added it now looks forward to the swift formation of a new parliament and government, and to working closely together.

“The coming period offers opportunities for further strengthening the EU-Turkey relationship and to advance in broadening EU-Turkey cooperation in all fields,” the statement read.
