Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has boasted that Bulgaria has outpaced Romania in the sphere of fight against corruption, as well as in taxes and EU funds absorption.

In a Monday interview for Nova TV, Borisov underscored that the prosecuting authority was “absolutely independent”, citing the lawsuits against former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov as a case in point.

He suggested that it was not necessary to initiate unmotivated lawsuits against former Prime Ministers Plamen Oresharski and Sergei Stanishev in order to prove that the prosecuting authority was free from undue external influence, adding that this would amount to witch-hunting.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister was adamant that the Chief Prosecutor was independent and that he did not need to arrest a high-profile person to prove that.

Borisov, as cited by dnevnik.bg, argued that the most tangible evidence of the successful fight against corruption was the increase in budget revenue.

As regards the topic of judicial reform, he stressed that it was not an initiative of the Justice Minister only but of the entire government.

He claimed that the Constitution could be amended to pave the way for the reform of the judiciary, provided that that was necessary.

Regarding referendums, Borisov noted that the validity threshold remained high in order to prevent referendums on populist topics.

He said that there were a number of populist parties that were eager to take advantage of a low validity threshold of referendums.

Borisov announced that he did not intend to replace ministers and that the mayoral candidates of ruling center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) for the big cities would remain the same in the upcoming local elections in autumn.

He noted that GERB would nominate the incumbent mayors of Sofia, Varna, Burgas, and Plovdiv (Yordanka Fandakova, Ivan Portnih, Dimitar Nikolov, and Ivan Totev, respectively) for a new term in office.
