''Why was Kosovo able to become independent, while Crimea shouldn't? In Kosovo, the decision was made by local Parliament, in Crimea the decsion was made after a referendum,'' stated Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview for the newspaper Corriere della Sera. ''In Donetsk and Luhansk people voted for their independence, but there the situation is quite different. But in order for someone to ask the population to remain within the boundaries of Ukraine, they need to prove that people will have better lives, with more hope, that they will be able to provide for their own lives and those of their children.''

He further commented on theories that Russia is interested in attacking NATO bases.

''The fear that possible aggressive action is possible on the part of Russia - this can be thought only by mentally unstable person, while one is daydreaming. Americans do not wish for Russia to get closer to Europe. They would like to preserve their leadership in NATO, so they need an external threat. Iran is no longer enough as such. So, who could they have picked otherwise?''
