EU Regional Policy Commissioner Corina Cretu arrives in Bulgaria on a 2-day visit on May 28.
The visit will focus on investments which the EU makes in the development of the region through its cohesion policy.
In the period 2014-2020, Bulgaria has been allocated EU funding of EUR 7.6 B under the cohesion policy.
The new operational programs aim to increase Bulgaria’s competitiveness through support for small and medium-sized enterprises in order to promote the creation of skilled and well-paid jobs; for the creation of systems and structures targeting the development of high-class research and innovation; for the improvement of basic infrastructure and services for the people such as water supply and waste management; for boosting administrative service and management.
On May 28 Cretu will meet with the Bulgarian ministers in charge of the investment programs created under the EU cohesion policy. A meeting with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has been dropped from the agenda for Thursday.
She will visit the Maritsa motorway, as well as a number of other sites in Sofia, which are being built with EU funding, and will discuss the challenges of urban development with Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.
On May 29 Cretu will participate in a conference titled “The challenges of the cohesion policy in Bulgaria 2014-2020” organized by Iskra Mihaylova, Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development (REGI), and the Bulgarian Construction Chamber.
