MPs met on Tuesday the first nominee for governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) – Dimitar Radev.

Radev is currently working as an adviser at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has more than 20 years of experience in the Finance Ministry, twice having served as deputy minister.

The chairperson of the parliamentary Budget and Finance Committee Menda Stoyanova presented the nominee to MPs from the parties supporting the coalition government.

However it remained unclear whether Radev was the nomination of the main ruling party – GERB or someone else, daily Dnevnik reports.

Stoyanova said that a maximum support and consensus for the election of the new governor was being sought.

According to her, reaching a consensus will be a clear sign that the politicians support the changes in BNB and are in favour of stabilising the central bank.

In case a consensus is reached on the nomination of Radev, the new governor of BNB could be elected within a month.

Radev was described as an expert with a considerable experience in the banking sphere, his ideas being backed with solid expertise.

However a MP from the junior coalition partner – the Reformist Bloc (RB) stated it was too early to say whether the party will support Radev or propose its own nominee.

The term of office of the incumbent governor Ivan Iskrov expires in the autumn, but the government is demanding his resignation due to the crisis with Corporate Commercial Bank (KTB).
